Acanthochonia
The receptaculitids are globe-shaped fossils composed of a series of elements with rhomboidal ends, originating from the center. The wall of the head consists of spirally arranged diamond-shaped plates. The thallus wall itself was calcified, rather than having a mucillage covering, as in other calcareous algae.
In life the axis anchored the plant to rocks or reef corals.
